LMA PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK IN ASSOCIATION WITH SKY SPORTS SOCCER SATURDAY - BRIGHTON ENDS LEAGUE LEADERS UNBEATEN RUN
The League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry Paul Ince and Rachel Yankey, has determined that the LMA Performance of the Week Award, in association with Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, should go to Brighton & Hove Albion Women for their 2-1 victory against Chelsea Women on Sunday 7th February 2021.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,500 competitive matches in professional football.
Brighton & Hove Albion Manager Hope Powell will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LMA Performance of the Week trophy.
On receiving the award, Hope Powell said: “I am delighted to accept this reward on behalf of myself, the backroom staff and the players.
“To beat a team as strong as Chelsea was down to hard work, organisation and team spirit and it’s nice that our achievement has been recognised by such an experienced panel of judges from the LMA.”
Four days after Albion's men's team enjoyed the best win in their history, Hope Powell's side emulated their Anfield achievement with a stunning success of their own.
Goals from Aileen Whelan and Megan Connolly, direct from a corner, sentenced WSL leaders to their first defeat in two years.
The champions had gone 33 games without defeat in the league and it looked like being 34 when Sam Kerr gave them an early lead.
But Whelan headed home from Connolly's corner soon to level. In the second half Albion had to defend for their lives at times but Connolly scored direct from a corner with 11 minutes to go and Albion dug deep to claim their third win of the season.
Emma Koivisto came in for her debut as one of five changes to the side beaten by Bristol City last week. Megan Walsh returned in goal and there were returns for Danique Kerkdijk, Geum-min Lee and Ellie Simpkins.
