MIKE SMITH: 1937 – 2021
The LMA is deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Smith, former Welsh national team manager, who has died at the age of 83.
Mike Smith originally played amateur football for Corinthian Casuals, whilst training at Loughborough College of Education, before becoming a teacher. After nine years coaching in Sussex, he was appointed the Football Association of Wales Director of Coaching with responsibility for managing the Welsh amateur and youth international teams. In 1974, he succeeded Dave Bowen to become the first English-born manager and first full-time manager of the Wales national football team, taking them to the quarter-finals of the 1976 European Championship.
Following three years in charge of Hull City, Mike became the manager of the Egypt national team, leading Egypt to African Nations Cup glory in 1986 and becoming the only British manager to have won the competition as a coach. He then went on to have a second spell in charge of Wales in 1994.
The thoughts of everyone at the LMA are with Mike’s friends and family at this very sad time.
