Southampton Manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale MBE has been awarded Barclays Women’s Championship Manager of the Month trophy for October by the LMA Panel.

Spacey-Cale's team moved up four places in the league through October with three 1-0 wins against strong opposition in Birmingham, Sheffield United and Sunderland, putting them amongst the teams vying for top spot at this early stage of the season.

Upon receiving the Manager of the Month trophy Spacey-Cale said: “Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to the LMA. It’s always a proud honour to win any award, especially in this division, but this is more than just an individual award – we’ve got such a fantastic squad of staff who work endlessly all week to get us in the best position possible heading into each matchday.

“There are so many departments here at the club who help us on a daily basis, and without them we wouldn’t be able to operate as a squad.

“The players have adapted to this league really well so far and obviously we’re enjoying the start that we’ve had, but we all know as a squad we are learning every game and session what it takes to play in this challenging league. So we will enjoy our achievement to date, but also know there is still work to do.

“And of course a massive thank you as always to our supporters who follow us home and away. Having our home games at St Mary’s has been a real highlight of the season so far, and the support both there and at each away game has been incredible.”

Chair of the League Managers Association panel Faye White MBE added: "Marieanne's team has adapted to the Barclay's Women's Championship very quickly and confidence is clearly high amongst the players and staff.

"The nature of the three wins shows a resilient team, defensively organised and able to take their chances when it counts. Marieanne has done a fantastic job of preparing this group of players for full-time football and will have realistic ambitions of challenging at the top of the league for the rest of the season."

The LMA panel for the monthly awards involves six highly experienced individuals with specialist knowledge of the women’s game and football management, including Faye White MBE (Former England International Captain and LMA Technical Advisor), Alan Curbishley (LMA Board Member and LMA Manager of the Year 1999/2000), Brent Hills (LMA Member and Technical Mentor), Mollie Kmita (Presenter and Host of Barclays Women's Championship Show), Mo Marley MBE (LMA Member), and Jen O’Neill (Editor of She Kicks - women's football magazine).
