Sir Walter Winterbottom CBE is a member of the LMA Hall of Fame.
Winterbottom was the first manager of the England natioanl team where he was manaher from 1947 until 1962.
Born in Oldham, Winterbottom began his playing career with Manchester United and played his first game in 1936. With United, he was part of the team that won promotion to the First Division in 1938.
He became England's national director of coaching in 1946 and was appointed manager in May 1947. His first game of the national team was a 7-2 victory over Ireland in September 1946.
Through four World Cup competitions, he managed the team (and arranged travel, accommodation and meals).
He was awarded an OBE in 1963 and a CBE in 1972, and was knighted in 1978. He died, aged 89, in February 2002.
In 2005, Winterbottom was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution as a manager with England.
