STATEMENT RELEASED ON BEHALF OF MARK BONNER:
“As my professional association with Cambridge United comes to an end, I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the club’s supporters.
“I am grateful to the owners and Board of Directors for giving me the honour of leading the team.
“It’s been a pleasure to manage some incredible players and I have enjoyed working with the many talented people at Cambridge United. I will miss the connections, camaraderie, and teamwork.
“Reflecting on our many achievements fills me with pride. To have played a part in our development towards a more professional environment and support team. To have helped foster a culture that was truly united. To have reconnected the city with its team, leading to the highest attendances in decades. To have worked off the pitch to positively impact the lives of those most in need across our city. Above all though, I am proud to have led the team for 201 games.
“The story of a football season and at a club like ours is that for the many unremarkable, forgettable days, every so often, games, teams and seasons come along that live in the memory forever. It’s about creating a connection. Like many, I will look back fondly on the experiences of promotion, the FA Cup and the Great Escape.
“Our challenges since 2020 have been vast, but through our togetherness and teamwork we made rapid progress. I hoped to be trusted to deliver the next stage of the project and expected that when signing a new long-term contract in September, I would be working towards building our next winning team and helping us to secure another season at this level.
“My successor will inherit a support structure around the team which is fit for purpose, and a working environment on the verge of completion. Our achievements, considering our constraints have been remarkable and I am proud to have fully invested everything into the project throughout. I put the club first, always.
“I move on now, ready to attack my next challenge with the same enthusiasm and work ethic, better for the experience and wiser for the opportunity.
“I wish everyone connected to Cambridge United Football Club every success in the future and hope to see the club continue to thrive.
“My heartfelt thanks and up the U’s!”
