SKY BET EFL MANAGER OF THE MONTH AWARDS: JANUARY 2017

The winners of the Sky Bet Manager of the Month Awards for January are:

Sky Bet Championship: Jaap Stam (Reading)

Reading manager Jaap Stam has been named the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for January.

Four victories from six games solidified Reading’s place in the Play-Off positions and underscored the patience that Stam preaches to his players - never more apparent than the win at Bristol City from 2-0 down with 18 minutes left.

Stam said: “It’s an honour to win the trophy but no manager can do it on their own. You need to have people around you to help you out, staff who have the knowledge and can pass it on to the team to help us get results.

“And if the players don’t perform, we don’t win a trophy like this! So I have to thank them as well because we get recognition thanks to their hard work, the performances they have been producing and the results we are picking up.”

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “Reading managed four wins in January, two at home and two away.

“They showed great spirit getting three points away at Bristol City after being two goals down with 18 minutes left and going on to win 2–3.

“Jaap has imposed his passing philosophy onto the team and it is being very successful.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Jaap completely overhauled Reading’s style in the summer and the fruits of his labour are definitely paying dividends.

“Brighton & Newcastle look to be safe for the automatic promotion places, but for first time in a long while, the gap between them and the chasing pack is bridgeable.

“Stam’s side are capable of stringing wins together and putting pressure on the top two and as we know, anything can happen in the Championship.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “In a month where all the top Championship teams seemed to struggle for consistency, it was Stam’s Reading who managed to create a mini-run of three wins at the end of the month, which helped to catapult the Royals into third place in the table.

“That treble of wins, priced at 18/1 and coming in the space of a hectic seven days, has seen Reading’s promotion odds cut from 7/1 at the start of January to 4/1 entering February, a sign that they are now established as one of the firm favourites for the Play-Offs.”

Sky Bet League One: Uwe Rösler (Fleetwood Town)

Fleetwood Town manager Uwe Rösler has been named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for January.

A 2-0 victory at leaders and promotion rivals Sheffield United was the highpoint of a month which didn’t have any lows for Rosler’s side. As impressive as their play is the consistency he has inspired which brought 13 points from five games.

Rösler said: “We’re glad as a team that we have got the recognition after winning 13 points from 15 in January, plus the cup games where we did well against Bristol City.

“As staff, it’s important we continue to look to build on that momentum into the next two games [against Rochdale and Bradford].

“We have to keep the standards high and keep the players on their toes. We need to keep progressing and developing our style of play to give ourselves more options without losing what already works for us.”

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “A successful month for Fleetwood Town remaining unbeaten and accumulating 13 points out of 15 available.

“Their highlight was an impressive 2–0 victory over leaders Sheffield United away from home.

“Uwe has pushed Fleetwood into a Play-Off position and they are looking strong to finish in the top six.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “After seeing off Shrewsbury, Bristol City & Coventry, the real test came against league leaders Sheffield United, but they saw them off with aplomb.

“This highlights just how far Fleetwood have come in a short space of time under Rosler, who is clearly a very talented manager.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “The rise and rise of Fleetwood Town continues to impress football fans across the country.

“They made an unbeaten start to League football in 2017 spanning five games in January, the first four of which were wins, landing at odds of 100/1.

“The finest of these was a 2-0 win at table topping Sheffield United. It took Rosler a while to get back into football after his spell with Leeds but he finds himself in a seriously good position at a club that is enjoying a splendid decade.

“20/1 at the start of January to be promoted to English football’s second tier, the Cod Army are now 13/2 to secure yet another promotion winning campaign.”

Sky Bet League Two: Darren Ferguson (Doncaster Rovers)

Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson has been named the Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month for January.

January began with Donny in third place in Sky Bet League Two. Five wins out of five later and Ferguson’s men ended it on top, seven points clear.

They did it in the style their manager demands, too, scoring three goals in all but one of their victories.

Ferguson said: “The team has played some very good football and scored three goals in four games during January, so it has been a brilliant month.

"Although it is an individual award, I feel it is recognition for my staff. It is a real team effort, including fans and everyone employed at the club.

“You can not do more than win five out of five matches. We had a big game at home against Portsmouth which we won and we kicked on from there with some brilliant football."

George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “A fantastic month for Doncaster Rovers having achieved a 100% record winning all five games in January.

“They started the month in third position and finished January top of the table and seven points clear.

“Darren loves his team to play attacking football and they showed this by scoring 13 goals in the month.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “The way that Doncaster have stormed to the top of League Two has been made all the more impressive by the style with which Darren has his team playing.

“With John Marquis firing on all cylinders, and James Coppinger still going strong, I think automatic promotion is all but assured even at this early point.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery said: “With two teams in League Two racking up a perfect month it is table topping Doncaster’s boss Darren Ferguson who gets the nod for Manager of the Month awards.

“Having led his side to a 33/1 fivefold of wins Rovers are looking like a serious candidate to achieve 100 points during the campaign.

“The blueprint for success is clear, they scored three goals in four of the five victories and are the top scorers in the division by some distance.

“Bookmakers rate their chances of continuing in this mood highly, with Doncaster’s odds for the League Two title as skinny as 4/11 even at this relatively early point in the run-in.”

The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Ipswich Town manager George Burley, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Marketing Director Drew Barrand, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery
