LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: SOUTHAMPTON
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Southampton following their important 6 - 1 victory against Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday 16th May 2015.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.
It is the third time the Saints have won the award this season. Previously, they won it in January for their 1 – 0 defeat of Manchester United at Old Trafford and last October following the 8 – 0 demolition of Sunderland.
Sadio Mane, Southampton’s winger, sped into the history books by taking just two minutes and 56 seconds to score a hat-trick, the fastest of the Premier League era. By the 38th minute the score was 5 – 0 with Shane Long netting two – the second a stunning strike from 40 yards.
“I enjoyed it very much, like all the fans,” said Ronald Koeman. “We had great movement from the strikers, great passing from the midfielders. An amazing afternoon.”
The Southampton manager expects Mane to get better. “He is a great player, it’s his first season in the Premier League and he is young."
