The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, have determined that the first LG Performance of the Week Award of the season should go to Southend United following their excellent 3-0 victory against Sheffield United in League One on Tuesday 16th August 2016.

The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.

Southend United manager Phil Brown will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, in a presentation to commemorate the award.

A blistering start to the game from Southend was rewarded with goals from a Jack O’Connell own goal, Stephen McLaughlin and Simon Cox to give the visitors a three-goal advantage at the break.

The away side held strong in the second half to record a much deserved victory on the road and their first of the season.

And Brown was delighted with the way his players rose to the challenge in a tough environment to get back to winning ways.

“To a man everybody stood up to the pressure tonight.

“We grew up tonight as a team, that doesn’t mean to say that we’re there, we haven’t arrived by any stretch of the imagination but at least we’ve put a marker down in the division now and people will now be looking what we can throw at them.

“Confidence is an important key factor in any game of football and in fact in any sport and confidence was waning, there was no doubt about it, but the belief has been restored with a tremendous three-nil victory at Bramall Lane.”
