LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: PRESSLEY BOOSTS SURVIVAL HOPES WITH WIN AGAINST PROMOTION CHASERS
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Fleetwood Town following their vital 2-1 victory against Coventry City in Sky Bet League One on Saturday 27th February 2016.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Fleetwood Town manager, Steven Pressley, will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.
Facing his old club at the Ricoh Arena, Pressley’s side fought hard against a Coventry team, who harbour ambitions of playing Championship football next season, and earned an important three points which lifted Fleetwood out of the relegation zone.
Two moments of quality from David Ball provided the catalyst for the win; his cross in the 56th minute setting up Wes Burns to head home, followed by an 83rd minute strike after Coventry’s Marcus Tudgay had leveled the scores.
Pressley told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "I'm very proud of my players. The only disappointment that I have is that it was only 2-1 in the end, because it should have been much, much more than that.
"It wasn't just the win that impressed me, it was the manner of it. It's difficult as a manager to individualise any player after such a performance, because it was one of real quality.”
Fleetwood followed the win against Coventry with a midweek win against another promotion chasing side, beating Gillingham 2-1 at home.
