LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: COOK’S PORTSMOUTH BEAT RIVALS TO KEEP PACE IN PROMOTION PUSH
The League Managers Association’s
five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson,
Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance
of the Week Award should go to Portsmouth following their impressive 3-0 victory
against fellow promotion chasers Carlisle United on Saturday 25th February
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Portsmouth manager Paul Cook will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and a LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.
A scintillating second half performance from Pompey saw them beat promotion rivals Carlisle at Brunton Park.
Goals from Gary Roberts, Amine Linganzi and Jack Whatmough ensured it was an enjoyable afternoon for the Blues in the north-west.
Neither side managed to take advantage of their chances in a first half that had plenty of talking points, but was short on quality.
It was the visitors who moved through the gears after the interval, however, and a fine strike from Roberts gave them a deserved lead.
Linganzi then opened his account for the club with another impressive strike to end Carlisle’s hopes of a comeback.
And Whatmough wrapped things up deep into stoppage-time with his first ever senior goal for the club.
