LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: SECOND HALF BLITZ SECURES McCLAREN’S FIRST LEAGUE WIN
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Newcastle United following their outstanding 6-2 victory against Norwich City in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday 18th October 2015.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Newcastle manager, Steve McClaren, will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.
Dutch midfielder Giorginio Wijnaldum inspired the win by becoming only the second player in Newcastle’s history to score four goals in a Premier League game.
Summer signing Wijnaldum’s first two goals came in a free scoring first half with Newcastle leading 3-2 at the break.
Newcastle then ran away with the game as fellow new signing Alexander Mitrovic extended their lead before Wijnaldum scored his hat-trick two minutes later. With 5 minutes remaining, Wijnaldum completed the rout securing a welcome three points which comes as a relief to McClaren and his backroom staff.
McClaren told BBC Sport: “I am so pleased for the supporters and players who have endured a lot.
“We’ve had a tough eight games and we’ve never got too down. We’ve just got work hard with another tough game next week.”
