LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: HUGHES TAKES HUGE STEP TOWARDS SAFETY WITH VITAL WIN OVER RIVALS
The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go Southampton for their crucial 1-0 victory against Swansea City on Tuesday 8th May 2018.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Southampton manager Mark Hughes will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.
Manolo Gabbiadini pounced to score the most important goal of his Southampton career to propel Saints to within touching distance of Premier League survival.
A predictably tense affair was decided 17 minutes from time, just four minutes after Gabbiadini replaced the stricken Jan Bednarek, as the striker forced the ball home from a goalmouth scramble.
It was far from beautiful, but absolutely invaluable.
Swansea huffed and puffed, but the goal visibly shook the home team, whose fate is now out of their hands.
It was a result that relegated West Brom, while Saints can now only go down should they succumb to a ten-goal swing on the final day.
