LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: HISTORIC WIN FOR HOWE’S MEN
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to AFC Bournemouth following their excellent 4 - 3 victory against West Ham United in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday 22 August 2015.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
AFC Bournemouth manager, Eddie Howe, will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.
Two first half goals from Callum Wilson put the Premier League new boys in the driving seat, only for West Ham to hit back with two early goals in the second half. Mark Pugh restored Bournemouth’s advantage before Wilson completed his hat-trick with a penalty following Carl Jenkinson’s sending off. West Ham’s Modibo Maiga pulled one back to set up a nervy finish but Howe’s team held on to record their first ever top flight victory.
On his team’s performance, Howe said: “We showed real character. At 2-2 it would have been easy to buckle and fold but we came back again and thoroughly deserved the win.”
“We really needed this today for our own belief that we can go anywhere and compete. We’ve done that in the two games we’ve had already and come up with nothing, so it was important today that we backed it up with a result.”
