LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: COOK’S WIGAN HIT SEVEN TO REMAIN TOP AT CHRISTMAS
The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Wigan Athletic for their emphatic 7-0 victory against Oxford United on Saturday 23rd December 2017.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Wigan Athletic Manager Paul Cook will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.
Latics produced one of the great displays of the club’s history to register a record-breaking 7-0 win at Oxford United on Saturday afternoon – the perfect Christmas present for Latics fans.
A Will Grigg hat-trick, brace from substitute Max Power and goals for Nick Powell and Gavin Massey secured Latics’ biggest-ever league victory, surpassing the 7-1 victory at Scarborough in March 1997 – over 20 years ago.
40 years a league side, Latics won’t have produced many better displays – neutrals amongst the press after the game debating whether it was the best performance they had seen in their careers. It would take some beating.
