LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: BRUCE’S VILLA BEGINS THE NEW YEAR WITH A BANG

The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Aston Villa for their emphatic 5-0 victory against Bristol City on Monday 1st January 2018.

The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.

Match Report

Villa turned the clock back 30 years to ring in 2018 with a resounding victory over promotion rivals Bristol City.

The 5-0 score line was a repeat of Villa’s win over Hull City on New Year’s Day in 1988 – when Graham Taylor’s men went on to win promotion.

The visitors were the more threating outfit for the opening 20 minutes but that changed dramatically once Scott Hogan had opened the scoring by sending a fine header looping over keeper Luke Steele from Albert Adomah’s left-wing cross.

Robert Snodgrass doubled the lead when he hooked home at close range after a cheeky James Chester back-heel and another excellent Adomah cross had set up Hogan for a header which was tipped out by Steele.

Jack Grealish hit the post with an angled drive just before the break and on the hour mark the young midfielder made a surging run from his on half before laying the ball off for Snodgrass to fire home his second goal.

Alan Hutton’s through ball enabled sub Birkir Bjarnason to calmly slot a low shot past the advancing Steele, and Conor Hourihane drilled home number five to complete Villa’s most convincing win of the season.
