James Beattie was most recently the first-team coach at Leeds United. Previously, Beattie was the manager of Accrington Stanley.
Following the appointment to Accrington Stanley in May 2013, Beattie entered football management for the first time.
The former Blackburn, Everton, Southampton and Sheffield United striker, who also had spells at Rangers, Blackpool and Stoke, initially joined the club as player/coach.
James made over 400 Premier League appearances, scoring over 120 goals, and also has five England caps.
In his first season in charge at Accrington, Beattie guided the club to a 15th place finish in Sky Bet League Two.
