Gemmill's coaching career began in 1984 when he was appointed coach at Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough. 

In 1994 Gemmill was appointed manager of Rotherham United, and went on to win the Football League Trophy in 1996.

In 2005 Gemmill took control of the Scottish U19s squad, leading them to second place in the European U19 Championships.

In his playing career Gemmill's clubs include St Mirren, Preston North End, Derby County and Nottingham Forest.  He was capped for Scotland 43 times and won the European Cup with Forest in 1979
